Founded in 2011 by the mother-daughter team Teta and Maya Gorgoni, Royal Jelly Harlem produces African-inspired home designs, such as this set of two African wax print cotton placemats. The cotton fabric for these New York City-made placemats is produced in West and South Africa through a traditional wax-print, or batik, method and represents African tribal patterns and motifs. The process involves melting wax and patterning it across a blank cloth. Then the cloth is soaked in dye, which is prevented from covering the entire cloth by the wax. Because the pattern of these Royal Jelly Harlem Cotton Placemats depends on where it was cut from the fabric, each one is slightly unique. Individually they measure 15l x 19"w. Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, and dry flat. Can also be hand washed. Iron on low setting if needed.
